This site is primarily about Florence Nightingale, but I thought it might be interesting to include a personal note on why exactly I find her such a fascinating figure.
I’m a nurse myself, and I was encouraged to be one by the stories I found about Florence in children’s history books. Mostly, we just think of that image of her as the ‘Lady with the Lamp’, and forget her solid contributions that weren’t based on feminine empathy or softness. She was practical and her innovations were actually important in shaping the course of modern nursing – I find myself remembering that when I wash my hands between visiting patients on the ward. Florence wouldn’t have countenanced the spread of superbugs like MRSA at all – in fact, perhaps she even foresaw it.
Overall she was always active, practical, determined and caring. That’s not a bad example for any modern nurse.
